Oral Hygiene

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is the primary reason adults over 35 lose teeth. Daily brushing and flossing can prevent gum disease. Brushing more than once a day further prevents periodontal disease, which is caused by germs. Additional steps, such as using the right mouth washes, gum massage, and oral irrigation can also help.

Choosing Best Oral Hygiene Products

Many of the latest tooth and gum gadgets can help but not all do the same job. Electronic toothbrushes are safe and effective for most patients. We have seen great results with the brands Rotadent and Interplak, for electric toothbrushes.

Rubber toothbrushes with rubber tips are for gum massage after brushing teeth. This increases blood circulation in the gums, which helps kill germs that cause plaque and cavities. However, if you have severe gum or tooth pain, plaque, or tooth decay, it is best to consult with your dentist before attempting gum massage.

Oral irrigators (that spray water in the mouth, onto the gums) are great for most people. However, these devices only clean gums and not teeth too. Brushing and flossing is still an important part of your dental regimen when using an irrigator.

Improved Nutrition for Dental Health

A good, balanced diet can help improve oral health. Foods that are starchy, or sugary and slow to dissolve, can increase damage to teeth. Avoiding these foods can help your body better fight the germs that create plaque, which leads to cavities. However, if you want to eat those foods, eat them with a meal since the extra saliva helps break down the sticky and starchy foods.
