Signs of Exposed Roots and What to Do About It

Admin • November 5, 2018

One of the oral health problems you may face is an exposed root. Discover some of the signs of an exposed tooth root as well as what you can do about the issue. If you notice these signs, contact a dentist as soon as possible.

Increased Tooth Sensitivity

Whether you have naturally sensitive teeth or not, one of the first signs of an exposed tooth root that you may notice is an increase in your tooth sensitivity, particularly with hot and cold temperatures. You might experience aching or a deep pain in your teeth when food or drink is too cold or hot but have no issues when it is lukewarm or room temperature.

Tooth sensitivity might also occur when you brush your teeth. If you suddenly notice that your tooth hurts when you brush it, particularly if you get close to the gums, this can be a telltale sign that you have an exposed root.

A Longer Tooth

Another potential sign of root exposure in your teeth is actually the way that your teeth look. If you notice that your tooth looks longer, you might have significant gum recession, which can lead to the root of your tooth being exposed.

While this can be a helpful visual indicator that something is amiss with your tooth, it is not the best sign that you have an exposed root. However, if you have sensitivity and your tooth looks quite different, you may have cause for concern.

Severe Pain

When the tooth root is exposed, this exposes the nerve attached to the tooth, and exposed nerves can hurt. Severe pain in your gums or tooth that occurs when you breathe in through your mouth, eat, drink, or do nothing at all is a sign that you should seek dental care right away. An exposed root is a common cause for such sudden and severe pain.

Treatment Options

The first step when you believe you have an exposed root is to go to the dentist. If you experience severe pain and your regular dentist is unavailable, find an emergency dentist near you to take a look. They can help determine the cause of your exposed root and recommend a treatment protocol.

Sometimes, switching to a toothpaste designed for tooth sensitivity is enough to relieve symptoms. Dentists can also provide medications that help with sensitivity and strengthen tooth enamel, which can, in turn, protect the root.

If gum disease is involved in the exposed root, you may need special cleanings, antibiotic mouthwashes, and even oral antibiotics. For severe gum recession, your dentist may send you to a periodontist to have gum grafts and other treatments performed. Other treatments for exposed roots can include fillings, crowns, and other standard dental procedures.

Tooth extraction may also be an option if the tooth is not in good enough shape to repair. When your dentist recommends tooth extraction, they will also often offer a cosmetic dental prosthetic like a bridge, dentures, or even a dental implant to keep your teeth looking as nice as possible.

If you know these signs of root exposure as well as the available options for treating the condition, you can contact your dentist as soon as you believe you may have an exposed tooth root. The sooner you seek out care and treatment for your exposed root, the sooner you can alleviate your pain and discomfort as well as prevent this issue from affecting your other teeth.
